More to do to tackle fuel poverty

The announcement that the Scottish Government’s Universal Home Insulation scheme is to be extended is welcome.

The Scottish Federation of Housing Associations believes tackling fuel poverty and improving energy efficiency must remain priorities for the Scottish Government.

While housing associations have the most energy efficient homes in Scotland, inflation-busting rises in domestic energy bills have seen investment in the energy efficiency of existing homes struggle to keep pace.

That is why the SFHA is calling for continued and significant investment in a national retrofit programme to improve the energy efficiency of Scotland’s existing homes. This programme would cut fuel poverty; create jobs and training opportunities and help tackle climate change by reducing carbon emissions (as existing homes are responsible for over 25 per cent of Scotland’s carbon emissions).
